Who We Are
Mavins Media Co-operative came together in September 2017 as a part of Solid State Community Industries. We spent the 2017-18 school year building our team, developing collective and individual skills, doing community and market research.
During that time, we built a digital media business offering website and social media construction, graphic design, branding and training. As young people immersed in digital culture we believe we have real skills, perspectives and insights to contribute and will be able to help all kinds of organizations with better a better web presence and more creative and engaging branding and designs.
Who knows the web and digital communications better than the youth that use and innovate it? We are young, highly energetic, creative, motivated and eager to serve Surrey businesses, individuals, non-profits, community organizations, schools, religious institutions and anyone who is interested in our services.
Our cooperative is designed to address two main issues.
The first is the endemic lack of opportunity and mobility for youth in Surrey. Young people in Surrey often struggle to find meaningful and decently-paid employment, and many have to travel long distances to find work. Our co-op is working to provide real incomes for all our team.
The second issue is the vexing and deeply-entrenched community safety concerns in Surrey. Very often narratives about youth in Surrey are reduced to sensationalist media exercises that demonize youth and their communities. The calls for more police and security have their place; however, we are trying to offer another kind of story. We believe that young people are almost universally capable, energetic, ambitious, and curious.
We humbly think we are working hard to realize some new possibilities: we are demonstrating that young people in Surrey are highly capable, committed, able to work hard and constructively. We are working to tell a different set of stories about Surrey and about young people.
